I took an inventory of all the gifts I give in a year, and I was dumfounded. I come from a large family; my parents, seven siblings and their spouses, in-laws, dozens of nieces and nephews, and their spouses and children. Add to that friends, coworkers, teachers…that’s a lot of gifts! Last year we had birthdays, Christmas, a wedding, several baby showers, a few hostess gifts, a going away party, a couple graduations, and probably more that I’ve forgotten. I love handcrafted gifts. I love making them, giving them, and receiving them. And every year I am determined to make as many of those gifts as I can. You see, I’m a pretty crafty person (or so they say) I paint and draw, I sew and embroider, I make jewelry, do woodworking, and more… something for everyone, so to speak. I always read these articles that claim, “Save money and make your own gifts!” But for me, at least, it never works that way. But it’s so expensive! Last year for Christmas I made a list of a few things I wanted to make. Two lap quilts, and 5 garden bracelets from glass beads; quick, easy, beautiful items. I walked into my local craft/sewing store, and realized I could go to our most expensive department store, and spend less money. This was not going to work. And so, I ended up making a few things, and then racking up my credit cards for the rest. Not a great plan... The madness must end! So this year I have challenged myself to make almost all my gifts, and to do it on a low, small, almost zero budget. And I refuse to put any gifts on a credit card this year. So what do I propose? I’ve started my list of how to get your supplies to make your crafts for low cost to free. And I will be adding to the list on a regular basis; your suggestions are always welcomed! And if you’re new to crafting, sewing, or just want to learn to make some of these items, I will have a few video tutorials and patterns for some fast and fun gifts to make. I’ve had friends ask me for videos on some of the items I made last year; Essential Oil cases, ruffled backpacks, reusable lunch sack, fabric & felt flowers, paper journals and a few more. Watch for those and more to come. And occasionally I’ll update you on things I’ll be making throughout the year, and give you the total of what I spent on those items. (Spoiler alert for any family & friends that may read this… you may see your gifts before you get them J) Join me this year on a Zero budget Crafting Adventure So if you want to have some fun, make some great gifts, and do it without breaking the bank, I’d love for you to join me. |
