This blog was really set up to talk about making crafts and gifts on budget… and next time I will be posting several projects to make (complete with a couple videos) …. but this week I need to take a slight detour. You see on my last blog one of the suggestions for low cost supplies was to use what you have on hand. That’s always a good idea….. unless you don’t know what you have on hand, or, like me, you know what you have but you just can’t seem to find it!
My craft room (yes a whole room… Hurrah for empty nesting!) Is a hodgepodge of fabric, paints, beads, and odd things that just seem to have no other home. And it’s gotten to the point that I don’t actually do any crafting in my craft room, I have taken over the dining room table for that. And of course I need my supplies out there so the dining room is looking a little too crafty as well. The beast, it seems has sprouted legs and is threaten to take over the whole house!
Ok, enough is enough; I will get this organized. The magazines, and online articles show these beautiful rooms done “for less than $10,000!” and I gasp! No, No, No, No, No … I am the queen of “how can I do this on the cheap,” so I decided to redo my room, and see how much DYI I can do, get a beautiful functional room, and spend as little as possible.
My sister suggested I do this as a video blog. I laughed, “No one wants to see that!” I am convinced that I am the only crafter that has to dig through a box or two (or three) to find the trim that I know is there. Or have to spill out a half dozen containers to locate the glass beads I just bought a month ago... I envision every other crafter in the world has one of those beautiful rooms I see in the magazines… Isn’t’ that how it is? But, in the end I decided to share my mess, my mire, and my makeover with you.
And along the way I’ll let you know the steps I’m taking – including what works, and what doesn’t. I will gleefully share with you the bargains (hopefully) I’m finding, and in the end, the fabulous Craft room I know is in there somewhere waiting to get out.
So, if you want to join me for the ride, click on the video and let’s get started. Then continue below the video, for first steps.

First Steps recap from the Video.
1. Snap a few photos
2. Find a blank wall you can use - we'll organize on paper first
3. Decide what your major categories are. For me they are:
Art & Drawing
Sewing & fabric
Beads & Jewelry
Scrapbook & papercrafts
4. Then you need to do an inventory.... not down to the individual spool of thread, but groups of items
Ribbons
Oil Paints
Water color pencils
Serger thread ........etc.
Write each one on a sticky note, and put it on the wall under the major category. This way you will know how much room you need for each area of your craft room/space.
For me, this is going to be quite a process, but once it's done the real fun begins; putting together the dream craft room!
If you’re joining me in this quest, we have a lot to do right now. So let’s get those steps in place. Stay tuned to see how we get from what we have to what we want.
